Checklist

ABDM and ABHA registration checklist

ABDM can feel like an alphabet soup of ABHA, HFR, HPR, and HPID. This checklist puts the registrations in order. Joining ABDM is voluntary for running a private clinic today, though it is becoming practically useful for things like scheme empanelment.

Each step links to a deep guide. We describe ABDM as a direction of travel and never claim a certification we have not earned.

Decide

  • Confirm whether you actually need it nowVoluntary for private practice; often useful for AB-PMJAY empanelment and record exchange. Several states are linking schemes to it.

Register the people and the place

  • Create your Healthcare Professional ID (HPR / HPID)The doctor-side registration comes first. Free.
  • Register the clinic in the Health Facility Registry (HFR)Done through the unified portal using your HPID account. Free; the Facility ID arrives after verification.

Patients

  • Help patients create an ABHA (number and address)Many already have one — link records with consent rather than creating a duplicate.

Keep it honest

  • Don't claim to be “ABDM certified”Use accurate language about what you actually support.
  • Keep records structured and exportable so they can travel with consent.
This is general information, not legal advice. ABDM portals, requirements, and timelines evolve, and some state schemes add their own conditions. Confirm the current process on the official ABDM portals for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is ABDM registration mandatory for a clinic?
No. Registering on ABDM is voluntary for running a private clinic and is not a licence to see patients. It becomes practically important for things like AB-PMJAY empanelment, and several states have begun linking schemes to it.
What is the difference between ABHA, HFR, and HPR?
ABHA is a patient's health account and number. The Health Facility Registry (HFR) registers the clinic as a facility. The Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) registers the practitioner. You register yourself first, then the facility.

Run the clinic once the paperwork's done.
